Unit Goal

Today we are going to put the words of the day on the board and then work on your compare/contrast essays. When you start writing please share the essays with me on google docs. Homework: Study vocabulary words and work on essays.

Tuesday

Today we are going to work on words of the day and then begin comparison/contrast essays. These are due on Friday.  1st - make sure you have a complete list of descriptions for Pa Sexton and Graddaddy Cain. Then fill out the outline I have given you.

Monday

Today we are going to put four words of the day on the board, spend some time finishing the short story outlines, make a detailed list of imagery that describes Granddaddy Cain, and start reviewing for the literary term quiz that will be coming up next week. Vocabulary quiz on Friday. Homework: Study literary terms.

Friday

Today we need to put vocabulary words on the board, finish reading "Blues Ain't No Mocking Bird" and fill out short story outlines. No Homework this weekend!

Thursday

Today we are going to read "Blues Ain't No Mockin' Bird" - and look for imagery, allusions, metaphors, similes, symbols, dialect, and irony.  You need to take notes on the description of Granddaddy Cain Definition of Blues: noun 1 . melancholic music of black American folk origin, typically in a twelve-bar sequence. It developed in the rural southern US toward the end of the 19th century, finding a wider audience in the 1940s as blacks migrated to the cities. This urban blues gave rise to rhythm and blues and rock and roll.      

Wednesday

Today we need to review "Split-Cherry Tree" with a carousel activity, work on the new vocabulary, and in small groups fill out short story outlines. Homework: Make sure you have a detailed list of physical descriptions for Pa Sexton and work on your vocabulary on vocabulary.com

Today we are going to review "The Cask of Amontillado", irony, and symbolism.  Your homework for today is to write a 1-paragraph blog entry about what you learned about irony and/or symbolism in the story "The Cask of Amontillado".  Perhaps think about/talk about how irony builds the character of Montresor, or the meaning of the story. After our discussion we are going to take notes on Imagery and Dialect, and the look at the story, "The Split-Cherry Tree" As you read "The Split-Cherry Tree" keep track of the following (you will need to post these to your blog for a blog grade): Split Cherry Tree Journal JOURNAL ENTRY—Keep a list of imagery, physical descriptions of the characters, the farm, the school, and the country and landscape. Discussion Questions to answer: 1) Compare and contrast Montresor and General Zaroff: how they think, how they view the world, how they view others, how they view themselves, the places they live, how they act—in essence compare their emotional, mental, and physical existences. 2) Why does Montresor feel justified in carrying out his plan against Fortunato? 3) Which character traits make Fortunato such an easy prey for Montresor (needs to be more than just his “connoisseurship in wine”. 4) In what ways are Montresor and Fortunato alike?
